This book is intended for the use of college and university students with some knowledge of ecology and as an introduction for agriculturalists, foresters, wildlife and plant ecologists going to work in e. Africa. It consists of an introductory chapter on the classification of vegetation types and two main parts, entitled vegetation types, and vegetation and environment. Part 1 contains 5 chapters on forests, rangelands, inland aquatic vegetation, vegetation of the sea coast and high mountain vegetation. Part 2 deals with environmental factors and contains 3 chapters on climate and vegetation, soils, and the history of the vegetation. The book is well illustrated with photographs and line drawings. The index of plant names, the list of floras and the extensive bibliography also enhance its value as a source of information on tropical ecology and land utilization. Part i (vegetation types) comprises chapters on the forests, the 'rangelands' (types of bush, thicket, woodland and grassland), and the inland aquatic, coastal and high mountain vegetation. Part ii (vegetation and environment) examines the relations between climate and vegetation in the region, and describes the soils and soil-forming processes; it also includes a final chapter (by a. Hamilton) on the history of the vegetation, based on evidence from fossils, pollen analyses, disjunct distributions, relict vegetation and human activity.
